Young Athlete Fall 2009

Special Olympics created Young Athlete to reach out to children with developmental disabilities ages 2 to 7, and to welcome them and their families to the Special Olympics movement. Special Olympics Addison County encourages both children with and without developmental disabilities to join our program.

Through Young Athletes, volunteers introduce young children to the world of sports with the goal of preparing them for Special Olympics sports training and competition when they get older. The program focuses on the basics that are crucial to cognitive development: physical activities that develop motor skills, and hand-eye coordination, and the application of these physical skills through sports skills programs.

Improved social skills is another inspiring reason parents enroll their children in Young Athletes. The confidence boost makes it easier for them to interact with other children on the playground, whether or not they have intellectual disabilities.

Young Athletes is an adaptable program that can work in a variety of learning environments. This program is simple enough for families to play with their young athletes at home, but it is also suitable for preschools, motor therapy sessions, Parks & Recreation Programs, playgroups, or any setting with small groups of young children with and without intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympics Addison County group will be starting in November!!!

Unified Sports

We’d like to start a school age Unified Program in Addison County.Unified Sports® are Special Olympics training and competition programs developed by Special Olympics in which approximately equal numbers of Special Olympics athletes and peers without intellectual disabilities (Partners) participate together on sports teams for training and competition against other Unified Sports teams.

Unified Sports® is a unique and influential program because it:
• Expands sports opportunities for athletes seeking new challenges.
• Dramatically increases inclusion in the schools and community.
• Allows athletes to develop sports skills and prepares them for participation in other community sports - and at a faster rate.
• Offers a positive foundation for activity between special education and general education students, family members, and adult athletes and volunteers.I

Individuals ages 8-18 interested in participating as an athlete or partner should contact Ryan at the above email or phone number.
